Are you missing out?

09-11-2011
Many of my coaching clients discuss their frustration in not being able to move forward in their careers, yet they often fail to see the part they might be playing in blocking their progress.

If you are consistently missing out on promotions to more senior positions, or are asked to do the 'acting manager/team leader/supervisor' role but it never becomes YOUR substantive role, take the time to reflect on your behaviours.
  • Are you coming across as 'anti-management' with your comments when you aren't in the senior role?
  • Do you complain about being too busy or 'overwhelmed' with the workload?
  • Are you constantly being heard criticising your team members, other departments or your current boss?
  • Are you known for being skilled in finding problems but rarely come up with workable solutions?
It doesn't matter how skilled you might be technically, or how long you have worked in the organisation, if you aren't being seen as leadership material, then you reduce your chances of moving up the ladder.

TIP - See yourself as working in a fishbowl where your actions and words are observed by your colleagues, direct reports and bosses. Take time to reflect on your attitude and actions and how they may be perceived by others.

Are you demonstrating the attributes of a leader?

Comments on Leadership

True leaders don't complain about their boss, the company, co-workers or the job all the time. They don't play games with people or put others down.

What are the people around you seeing in your behaviours?

Are you displaying leadership qualities?

Dare to be yourself, what others think of you is none of your business.
